Vermifuge for dogs and pups: why deworming your pet?

Writer: VividPetFoodVividPetFood

Deworming his dog is important because many internal parasites, better known as worms, are likely to infest his body.

If the majority of these worms are intestinal, that is to say they come to lodge in the digestive system of the dog, some species can establish residence in other organs such as the heart and lungs …

Why is it important to deworm?

The worms of the dog and the puppy are about the same; they live by taking nutrients directly from their gut (tapeworm), sucking the blood from the intestinal mucosa (hookworms) or else they feed on the blood plasma of the animal in the heart or muscles. Larvae of some species are even able to migrate all over the body of their host.

Unfortunately, the symptoms associated with worm infestation are not very visible, they are quite common disorders that can manifest themselves in many diseases of the dog: diarrhea, vomiting, cough, skin and dull coat, weight loss and d appetite, anemia … This is why it is essential to deworm his dog or puppy regularly in a preventive way, especially since most of these parasites are likely to be transmitted to humans and especially to children. they play on the ground or with the animal.

When and how to deworm the puppy?

The puppy’s deworming can and must be done within the first few months, because intestinal worms are common in puppies because they are transmitted by the placenta and then by the mother’s milk if it is (was) infested. Then, at the time of weaning, the puppy will go through a more fragile period where he may catch worms and diseases waiting for his antibodies to be made, since he no longer draws those of the dog through the milk.

An infestation of parasites in the puppy can have serious consequences, such as the transmission of worm-borne diseases, deficiencies, coagulation disorders or a decrease in immunity, which makes the puppy vulnerable for all its life during the first veterinary consultation. the first dewormer will have to be administered and then renewed by him or by you two weeks later. As a general rule, the puppy deworming is given twice a month, until the puppy’s 2 months, then monthly until 6 months of age. After this age, we can move to the rhythm of the adult dewormer, always on the advice of your vet who will recommend a pre-emptive treatment active vermifuge against several types of parasites.

When and how to deworm the adult dog?

The frequency of administration of the dewormer for adult dogs is every 3 to 6 months, the recommended minimum being twice a year. This will depend on the habits of life and the environment of the animal: is it in contact with other dogs or pets? Does he have access to a garden? If you live in the city, do you often go out into public green spaces? – these are heavily contaminated unfortunately. Does he dig or hunt, eat animal droppings, or just about anything he finds on the ground while walking, etc.?

If the answer to these questions is yes, consider a high deworming rate that is four times per year or more (to be determined with your veterinarian). On the other hand, if your dog is not exposed to contamination, if he comes out of the apartment and does not live with other animals, a frequency of two times will be sufficient.

As for the favorable moment, it is normally advisable to deworm during the intermediate seasons (spring, autumn) because it is during these periods that the parasites will reproduce the most and especially at the end of the summer. Be careful, note that some products must be administered fasting to be effective, read the instructions before use!

What kind of dewormer to choose?

Again, the vet will be best able to determine the right kind of dewormer for your dog, in terms of dosage and method of administration. The dosage will be calculated according to the weight, age and sex of the animal. The most common and most convenient type of vermifuge to administer is deworming tablets: to give directly to the dog, to hide in the mash or to dissolve in its bowl of water. There is also dewormer powder, often more profitable because bought “wholesale” and then mix in food.

Pipette dewormer (such as flea products) is currently developing rapidly and is beneficial for animals that refuse to swallow the drug. Of course, it will also be up to you to choose which type of administration suits you best, as well as to your dog or puppy, but as for the composition of the vermifuge pay attention to the products sold without prescription at the pharmacy or on the Internet. Their spectrum of action is sometimes not enough and they do not treat all parasites. In addition, it can sometimes be exclusively preventative products, which will have no impact if your animal is already infested. This type of product also exists in a natural (non-chemical) version, which is attractive, but again if their action is limited to prevention
